The poor are assured of two square meals a day here in the langar of the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple. Over 80,000 to 100,000 people are fed here, round the clock and totally free of cost. And what was reassuring was, it was free, but not a free for all! Everyone here was fairly well disciplined. They collect their plate and bowl at the entrance, come in and sit down, eat their meal, pick up their plates and drop it into a bin, wash their hands and walk out. No pushing, no shoving, no catcalls, nothing. In fact I found that most people do not even talk among themselves, or even if they do, do so in hushed voices, to maintain the sanctity of the place.
